Actually Made Here: What Australian Made Means at The Purc Shop
At The Purc Shop, we’ve always believed that how something is made matters just as much as how it looks. Our beds aren’t just designed in Australia. They’re not just assembled here either. They’re actually made here in our workshop in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales.
That might sound obvious. But in an industry filled with clever wording, “Australian” doesn’t always mean what you think it does.
Scratching the Surface
It’s easy to assume that a bed labelled “Australian” has been made locally. But more often than not, those words simply mean the company is Australian-owned or that the design originated here. Behind the scenes, many beds are mass-produced in offshore factories — often using imported materials like plywood or MDF, treated with chemicals and fumigated on arrival.
We’re not here to throw shade. We just believe you deserve to know what you’re bringing into your home — especially something as central to your family’s life as a bed.
Why Local Matters
When we say our beds are Australian made, we mean it. Each piece is made to order in our small workshop, using sustainably sourced Australian timber — Tasmanian Oak or, more recently, Tasmanian Blackwood. That means no shipping containers, no off-gassing from synthetic glues, and no compromises on quality.
We also keep it small. Small production runs. Small footprint. Small team, led by Marty — the same person who makes your bed, manages the workshop, and probably delivers it to your door if you’re nearby.
This slower, more intentional way of making things means your bed isn’t just one of thousands. It’s yours. Designed to suit your space, built with care, and made to last.
The Beauty of Solid Timber
We work exclusively with solid Australian hardwoods, chosen not only for their natural beauty but for their strength, sustainability, and low toxicity. Unlike a lot of flat-packed furniture that relies on veneers, laminates or MDF, our beds are built to age gracefully — not fall apart in a few years.
And because we keep everything local, our timber doesn’t need to be chemically treated or fumigated when it arrives. It’s clean, natural, and safe for your family.
Made for the Long Haul
We don’t believe in short-term fixes — especially when it comes to sleep. Whether it’s your toddler’s first big bed or a timeless design for your room, our beds are made to grow with your family and your life.
So when you choose The Purc Shop, you're not just choosing a bed. You're choosing local craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and a better way of making — for your home, and for the planet.
